The terms are often used interchangeably. A cold plunge is usually a chilled tub or pool kept at a steady temperature, often between 3 and 12°C. An ice bath is typically cooled with ice, so the temperature depends on how much goes in.
Alternating between a sauna and cold water is known as contrast therapy. Many sauna clubs run sessions in rounds, moving between the heat and a cold plunge with rest in between.
Cold water immersion isn't suitable for everyone. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or are pregnant, speak to a doctor first, and follow the venue's guidance on how long to stay in.
